How I Use Powerful Colors to Tell Stories

Abstract art is a powerful form of expression where color becomes the main storyteller. Without defined shapes or recognizable subjects, I rely on color to create emotions, shape moods, and tell visual stories that resonate deeply with my viewers.

The Emotional Power of Color

Colors have a psychological impact that can trigger different emotions. Warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow evoke passion, energy, and warmth. In contrast, cool colors like blue, green, and purple bring a sense of calm, serenity, or even melancholy. By carefully choosing colors, I can create an intense, dramatic atmosphere or a soothing, peaceful one.

Setting the Mood Through Color

The way colors are combined also influences the overall mood of a piece. Bright, saturated hues generate excitement and vibrancy, while muted, neutral tones create a more introspective and meditative feel. High contrast in colors can evoke tension and dynamism, whereas harmonious color palettes encourage a sense of balance and unity. I play with those various colors to play with your mood. Each color responds to an emotion. And combining all together in my paintings sets the mood in your room.

Telling Stories with Color

Even without clear imagery, color can narrate a story. That is what happens when I use contrasting colors to symbolize conflict, or harmonious tones to represent peace and resolution. The colors that I use are a referral, a call to my path through years, countries, and encounters.

To help you understand better where I am going and my intention when I am choosing my colors, here's a little guide to color theory.

  • Primary Colors: Red, blue, yellow – the foundation of all colors.

  • Secondary Colors: Green, orange, purple – made by mixing primary colors.

  • Complementary Colors: Opposites on the color wheel (e.g., blue & orange) create strong contrast.

  • Analogous Colors: Neighboring colors (e.g., blue, blue-green, green) offer harmony.

And finally, here is some info about the psychological effect of color and how it can impact your mood:

  • Red: Passion, urgency, power.

  • Blue: Calm, trust, sadness.

  • Yellow: Happiness, energy, caution.

  • Green: Growth, nature, renewal.

  • Purple: Royalty, mystery, creativity.

  • Black & White: Simplicity, elegance, or stark contrast.

By mastering the color theory, it allows me to craft pieces that engage and move you.

In abstract art, color is more than just pigment—it’s emotion, mood, and story combined.

And now, you know why I ask so many questions when I create a commission for you. ;)
